Pity, even though there was no hot water or inside bathrooms and only 1 fireplace to heat the whole house it was a great place to live. I was eleven when we left. I can still remember my pals Richard and Martin Jay. My brother Vernie and I used to play all over the moors with them two. Hope they are both well. Date: 27.06.2003 E-mail: malcmmr@aol.com Name: M heppinstall spent many holidays in Denholme in the 50 and 60. I can remember watching the cricket with my late uncle Eric Mason playing. The walks over the old railway station bridge and down to the reservoir. Would walk down to Foster’s mill and watch them working thro the windows fishing for Gold fish round the back in the beck.
Seeking Margaret Moore Hello!! I was wondering if there is anyone in the village who can remember Margaret Moore who wed Frank Whitaker. They had a daughter Barbara Denise born 1943. I would be grateful for any information. Thank you. Marion Wilkinson but.wilks@blueyonder.co.uk Does anyone remember Thomas and Ida Harte Does anybody remember my grandparents, Thomas and Ida Harte? They passed away on 10 December 1958 as a result of a gas leak in their house. Their son, my father, died this summer, and it has made me want to find out more about them. sally.harte@dpag.ox.ac.uk Looking for Our Book 1 My father the late Sydney Wright, was a butcher in Denholme in the 40's and 50's, it was a very special time in my life, and one that I will never forget. I still keep in touch with several of my old schoolfriends, even though we have lived in Australia for nearly thirty years. A few weeks ago my friend Rita Smith(Whalley) sent me a book "Our Book 2" which was read from front to back, within the hour of it falling thro our front door, by all of the family!!! Rita told me previously that there had been another book written (I presume book 1) I know that she had tried on many occasions to get it without success. Is it possible that there are some around? I know several ex Denholmite's who would dearly love one. Also could I ask, if anymore are written, could the married one's please include their maiden names!! My best regards to all, especially the ones who remember my dad, Pauline Gulyas (Wright) pauline_g@exemail.com.au Seeking old photos of Denholme Born in 1952 and raised in Denholme, until moving to Keighley in 1968, and then Australia in 1977, I am interested in finding old photos of Denholme, particularly the old Denholme Primary School, which has now been removed. Please could you tell me if you know of any source of photographs and other memorabilia for anything to do with Denholme's history from its beginnings until at least 1970. Any help would be most appreciated. I have lived in Hillcrest Rd, Hillcrest View and Ann St - the latter having been demolished around the mid '70s I believe. It might be a long time since I was home, but I'm still very much a Denholme-ite at heart. All the very best, Allan Borrick. Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. email: allan@borrick.com Lost family I am researching my family history and wonder if you can help. I lost contact with my father 20 years ago. He was born in Denholme on the 3/8/59. His name is Alan Gerard Bentley. His mother was Patricia and Father John. He also had 2 sisters Julie and Michaela and 2 brothers Andrew and Christopher. They originally lived on Longhouse lane. I realise this is probably not your area but I would be grateful if you know anything, or any of them to tell them that I am looking for them, or maybe know a way I could trace them and get in touch. Thank you for your time. Jessica Stewart : email jessinibiza@hotmail.com Seeking family history I am doing some research on my family and understand that the library has records which would be useful to me. My great grandfather was Samuel Tetley who lived in Denholm in 1840 to his death in 1867 He was a weaver and then a coal agent. He was one of the founding members of the Baptist Church in Denholm in 1851, and one of its deacons until he died. The church was closed in 1980 and all that remains is a stone marker by the disused grave yard. I am looking for information about the founding of that church and any reference to my great grandfather. I believe that the records for the Denholm Baptist Church are in the Keighley Library. His eldest son, my grandfather, was John Pickles Tetley (1839-1913). According to an account of his life given to the Taunton (Somerset) Courier he attended school at the Keighley Grammar School, before becoming a weaver of worsted at about the age of 9 or 10. I would like to know about that school. I am assuming that it was the fore runner of the Keightley Grammar School for Boys. Later he studied with a Mr Jowett, a Quaker gentlemen who ran a small school or classes but I am not sure of the location – Keighley, Denholm or Thornton.. Again I would like to know more about that school. I think it must have been a night school. In 1861 at the age of 22 he left weaving, he was by then a foreman and entered the Baptist College at Chillwell and became a Baptist minister. This caused a rift in the family that was never healed and we the descendants know nothing about our Yorkshire roots. According to the article in the Taunton Courier the Denholm Baptist Church encouraged him to enter the ministry - with the exception of his father. There should be some record of the church’s action in the Deacons’ Minutes or congregational minutes I would appreciate it if you could pass this message on to the Library. I would be glad to pay someone to research this information for me. Ontario CANADA Email – helenatet@sympatico.ca Helena Tetley |
